As of a few years ago, it became hip to say, “content is king.” Now, we all know it, and if you say it, half of the room is going to roll their eyes. But the way in which people react to media is changing ever so slightly. Over the past few years or so, things have shifted to favor visual content. We’re talking about quote graphics, the rise of SnapChat, video marketing, etc. It’s no longer good enough to just have a pithy text blog. That blog now needs to be visually stimulating, and it needs to be supplemented by visual content.

Visual marketing works so well for brands for several reasons:

  • The human brain is hardwired to react to visual stimuli instantly. Think about how much thought actually takes place when you see a green light. Probably none. You just react by instantly pushing the accelerator. That is actually quite profound.
  • Photos are great at communicating a whole set of information, both directly and indirectly related to your brand and message.
  • Video content is often perceived as more credible than text. They say seeing is believing.

Take a Look at These Three Tricks

1. Video Everywhere: From your home page to your PPC ads on social media to your blog content, video works. In fact, 75% of users visit the company’s website after viewing their video. Use a welcome video on your home page to direct traffic to your opt-in, shoot behind-the-scenes videos for Instagram, share how-to video tutorials to boost interest in your products, etc.

2. Quote Graphics: Everyone likes to feel inspired or empowered, and quotes from influencers and thought leaders are a great way to do this. But no one stops scrolling for a text quote. So slap that quote over a stunning image of a mountain or waterfall. Inspire others, and it will be shared far more than plain text, leading to more visibility and traffic.inspire

3. Visual Words: Guess what – one popular visual trick doesn’t even use imagery. Using visually related words is often a powerful motivator. Words like “look,” “see,” “show,” and “watch” tell people they’re about to get to see something, even when they’re not currently looking at imagery. An example of this technique is this very blog post. Ask yourself why you clicked on it. Then take a look at the first word of the title. Maybe – just maybe – this stuff actually works.
