These days, with content marketing dominating, your copy has to be sizzling hot or your business will be left behind with all the other white noise. Fortunately, you can implement these seven tips from the professionals to heat up your content, engage your readers, and bring in targeted leads who are interested in doing business with YOU.
Follow these 7 copy writing tips brought to you by professional copy writers!
- Put your best foot forward: Readers are busy and easily distracted these days, so don’t keep them waiting – throw out your best point right up front. If you want to build up to this point, at least give them a teaser at the top to keep them reading instead of going back to scrolling.
- Speak imperatively: It may feel safer to use vague or wishy-washy terms, but copy writing isn’t the place for it, because it makes you sound like you don’t know what you’re talking about. For example, instead of saying, “We feel that you need to take advantage of our service,” strengthen their confidence in you by saying, “Our service will make all the difference for you.” Notice the use of “will?” Imperative words build authority and trust.
- Ask YES questions: Do you need to get more conversions? Do you want to see more results from your copy? Then start getting people in the habit of saying YES, by asking the kind of questions I started this paragraph with – get people saying yes automatically by asking the right questions.
- Use imagery: I know we’re talking about copy here, but the fact is we’re a visual society, and the most persuasive and memorable copy is accompanied by vivid visuals. Professionals know that even the most powerful copy is worthless without imagery to break up the monotony.
- Talk benefits, not features: In 1930, Elmer Wheeler coined the well-known marketing adage, “Sell the sizzle, and not the steak.” It’s still true today. Talking about what your product or service does is helpful, but not motivating. When you talk about how it will benefit our customer, however, that’s sizzle – and that motivates people to do something, whether it’s buy from you or just click on your blog (notice the title of this post).
- Make the text visually appealing: Make it a habit in your copy writing to never resort to long, wordy paragraphs that cover your reader’s entire screen. Use frequent sub headings and bullet points to make your copy more digestible.
- End with a strong call to action (CTA): Always including a straightforward CTA at the end of your copy makes it easy for your reader to take the desired step that you were looking for when you wrote that copy. Save the subtle hints for elsewhere and state flat out what you would like your reader to do next. Help your reader along, and they will follow you to the moon and back.
Using these copy writing tips from the pros will certainly improve your advertisements, content marketing, and even social media blurbs. Use them every chance you get to stand out from the crowd and give your copy that irresistible sizzle.
